We put together a list of 6 easy things you can do to quickly cut down on your spending and bolster that savings account.
1. Take Care of Your Wheels
A recent study showed that most people's car tires are 5 - 10 PSI under their recommended pressure. What most people don't realize is that your car tires are rated for those pressures to maximize gas mileage, so leaving your tires not fully inflated is actually increasing the number of times that you have to stop and fuel up.
2. Cut Out Cable
An antiquated and overrated practice is the obsession of renewing basic cable packages year after year. The most ridiculous part of this is that most people only watch a few of the channels that they are paying so much money for annually. Most streaming services are relatively inexpensive, and jam packed with enough content to entirely substitute traditional cable services. The basic Netflix and Hulu streaming packages are both $7.99 per month, while the most basic cable packages begin at just over $20. Not only will you be saving money each month, you will also be watching far less commercials. A huge advantage that cable television had in this battle was the access to live sporting events, but recently Hulu has begun to stream live events like the Stanley Cup and NBA finals, so now there really is no good reason to overpay the cable company!
3. Keep Track of that Change
Picture this, you're sitting in that fast food drive through about to hand over a crisp new fiver for some nuggets, just to throw the 76 cents you get back in a cupholder and forget about it forever. We recommend to keep your change in an easily accessible place, like a coin purse, so that you'll have an extra dollar in your wallet after making small every day purchases like fast food.
4. Hunt Down Student Discounts
This one is just for the college kids looking to save what little spending money they have left. Undoubtedly you've all taken advantage of heavily discounted sports tickets to your school's teams, but did you know that numerous major league teams also offer generous student discounts? MLB teams like the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, and the New York Yankees, just to name a few, all offer generous discounts. NHL teams including the Blues, the Bruins, and the Penguins also offer discounts to college students. In addition, numerous companies want to hit this demographic, so they offer substantial deals such as: the Spotify/Hulu bundle for just $4.99 a month, Apple giving students 5% off most purchases, and 50% off Amazon Prime for students.
5. The Most Important Meal of the Day
This one may seem a little random, but think about it; why is it that your most important meal of the day also happens to generally be your cheapest meal of the day? If you start the day out with a hearty breakfast you'll have enough energy to get through the day and you are less likely to blow your paycheck on expensive lunches and dinners.
6. Make Money from your Phone
Never know what to do with the spare moments throughout your day? Money making apps are a great way to productively spend time that you would otherwise be wasting. The majority of people nowadays are on their phones 24/7, so why not make a little extra cash while you do it? There are a plethora of apps out there dedicated to helping you make money, but my personal favorite has to be Zap surveys. Available on iOS and Android, Zap Surveys is by far the best bang for your buck when it comes to survey apps. With tons of great features and high paying surveys to take, Zap Surveys is guaranteed to put a little extra cash in your pocket.
